Hi, I’m Derrick . comedy has long been a part of my life in one way or another. Being the Valedictorian AND the class clown is not easy, but I am far more proud of the second. Life and it's struggles just seem so much easier when you can grasp the humor in them.
A "funny" story
One evening in September of 1985, I laid down but did not wake up for three days. I know, not funny yet. I had undergone what the doctor’s would later term “random bleeding from point ‘x’ for an unknown reason” (mmm? either I just had some major head trauma, or I am a 12 year old girl). I was in a coma and underwent brain surgery from which I became completely paralyzed. It would take years of therapy to re-learn the basics like getting dressed, standing and talking. All kind of important things for a comic. I am still unable to use my left arm and I walk kinda 'funny', but I have learned (and laughed) a lot through all of this. Think about it, if I wanted to be the Karate kid, all I gotta do is, WAX ON!
I also believe in the God of the Bible. Although it doesn’t make sense to me why he would allow this, I realize now that if he were small enough to be completely understood, he wouldn’t be big enough to be worshiped. My job in His plan is simply to trust Him and be His friend. Living with my injury has given me a new perspective on a lot of things and hopefully I am able to help others do the same. This glass is half full. It's just the right half.
So why not come out to one of my shows, buy a t-shirt and hang out after ..."if you know what I mean".
